The golf society, back from the round
They arrive together at about seven, sunburnt, with the day's scorecards and a trophy that has seen better decades. We put the trophy on the counter where the whole hall can see it, run the tables as one bill or twelve, whichever the captain says, and the presentation happens between the first set and the second, when the band is on a break and the room can hear a speech. Societies book by messaging with the day and the number; the day is usually the same each week, and the tables along the stage edge become theirs by habit. Golf societies have their own page, because the town has dozens and the bar is always the clubhouse.
