Why people choose Jomtien, and what they give up
Jomtien is the second town, twenty minutes south of Central Pattaya over the headland, with its own long beach, its own beach road, and its own regulars, who chose it on purpose. What they chose is a slower night: a beach road with bars along it rather than a strip, a crowd that is older and more settled, condominiums rather than hotels, a Scandinavian and German presence that Central Pattaya does not have, and the sea at the end of every soi. The bars on this list are ranked by Google, and the ones at the top are the ones with a kitchen and a view, which tells you what the town is for.
Wombat and Kiwi is the Australian and New Zealand room with the rugby on and a menu, and it is where a lot of Jomtien's evenings start. Hemingways' Jomtien branch is the sister of the one in Pattaya and does the same job with a sea breeze. Sea You is a beach bar on the sand with the sunset. ZAMA is the rooftop, on the top of a tower, with the whole of Jomtien beach below it at dusk. Bryghuset is the Danish bar, and the Danes fill it. RomPho Complex is the beer bar complex of the town, smaller and quieter than Tree Town and open to the sky.
What Jomtien gives up is a band. There are singers in bars and a house band at one or two of the bigger rooms, but the town does not have a stage a whole hall faces, and the people who live there and want one come over the hill for it. There is a baht bus from Jomtien beach road to Central Pattaya every few minutes until late, up over the headland and down Second Road, and it stops on Second Road at the Soi 13 turning, which is three minutes on foot from the Las Vegas sign.
Two towns in one night
The way Jomtien regulars do a night with a band in it: sunset from a beach bar on the sand or the roof of ZAMA, dinner at a room with a kitchen along the beach road, a baht bus over the hill at about nine, and the second set of the band at a stage-side table in the hall at ten. The bus back runs until well after the band stops. It is twenty minutes each way and it is the only journey of the night.
The way Central Pattaya regulars do Jomtien: a baht bus over the hill in the afternoon for the beach, which is longer, cleaner and quieter than Pattaya's; a sunset from Sea You; and back over the hill for the band. Jomtien in the afternoon and Pattaya at night is the order, because Jomtien's night is a dinner and Pattaya's is a band, and the dinner comes first.
The list above ranks the town's bars by Google's rating weighted by review count, the rule stated so you can argue with it, and each entry has its distance from our door, which for Jomtien is between three and six kilometres and always a bus. We are the last bar on the right in a hall on Soi Diana, and this page is on the site because the people at our counter on a Friday include a table of Danes who came over the hill.
