Full disclosure first: we run KQ Bar, one of the ten bars in the complex. Read this knowing that. It is still the most honest walk-through of the place you will find, because we are in it every night and we have nothing to gain from you having a bad one.

The place

Las Vegas Beer Garden opened in April 2024 on Soi Diana, the short street between LK Metro and Second Road. It is a steel hangar the size of a small warehouse, lit in cyan, green and magenta neon, with a stage at the far end painted as a tropical Las Vegas skyline. Ten bars line the walkway, five a side, each with its own name, staff and till. No entry fee, no minimum. Open from six until three, live band from nine to 1 AM.

Arriving

You will be greeted before you are through the gate. Staff from the first bars stand in the walkway and invite you in, warmly and persistently. Nobody is rude about it, but most people sit down within ten metres of the entrance without seeing the rest. If you have a bar in mind, say so and keep walking. If you have not, the front bars are a perfectly good place to start; they are the loudest and the busiest, which is what a lot of people came for.

The band

This is the reason the complex works. Music every night and no cover charge: MHz Band Thailand from Tuesday to Sunday, a DJ on Monday. Covers, mostly, played well: rock and pop that a mixed room of British, Australian, German and Scandinavian visitors all know. One Google reviewer called them "a bit like a wedding band", and he meant it kindly. They are tight, they are loud without being painful from most seats, and the singer talks to the crowd between songs.

What most visitors miss is that the sound is very different depending on where you sit. From the entrance the band is background. From the middle it is company. From the back, beside the stage, it is the show, and you can see the drummer count in.

The cold

The hall is cooled hard. Reviews split on this: one regular calls it the best air-conditioned venue in the area, another says it is too cold to stay for more than two drinks. Both are right on different nights. Bring a light layer if you feel the cold, and sit further from the vents if you do not want a jacket in Pattaya.

The bars, honestly

They are not all the same, whatever the one-star review says, but they are more alike than different: open fronts, high tables, cold beer, hostesses who will chat if you want them to and leave you alone if you do not. The differences are position and what is behind the counter. The front bars have the crowd. The middle bars are quieter. The back two, either side of the stage, have the band in front of them. Ours is the one on the right; it has the only Guinness tap in the hall, and our reviews say the staff leave you to enjoy the night, which we take as the highest compliment going.

Verdict

For a loud, easy night with a live band and no ticket, Las Vegas Beer Garden is the best of its kind in Pattaya, and it is two minutes from LK Metro. Come at half seven if you want a seat by the stage, bring a layer, and walk all the way to the back before you decide where to sit. You will have walked past us on the way. Say hello.

A second visit, a year on

The first review on this page was written after a Friday. The second visit was a Tuesday in low season, which is the fairest test of a building, because a hall that only works when it is full is a hall that works four nights a year. It was about a third full at nine. The DJ had the stage. The cold was the same cold, and it was more noticeable with fewer bodies in it. The front bars were quiet in the way they are quiet on any night, and the middle bars had the pool table going and not much else.

The back of the hall was where the Tuesday was happening. The stage-side tables, which on the Friday had gone by half past seven, were half empty, and the people at them were couples and regulars rather than the groups the weekend brings. The counter at KQ had Save on it with time to talk about the pour, which on a Friday he does not have. The DJ played to the room rather than at it, and the room talked over him without leaning in. It was, for a person who wanted a seat by a stage in a cold room without a queue, the better night.

What had changed in a year: one bar in the middle had changed hands and improved. The band was the same band and tighter. The toilets were the same toilets, still the cleanest in the hall. The sign over the gate had a letter out. Nobody at any of the ten bars sat down uninvited, on either visit, which is the sentence this review exists to write.

The verdict, revised

The first verdict stands and gets a sentence added. The hall is the best room in Pattaya to hear a band at close range in the cold, with the honest caveats that the middle of the hall is louder than the front, that the front bars are the ones that catch people and the back bars are the ones that keep them, and that the whole thing is a beer hall with a stage rather than a venue with a bar. The added sentence is that it works on a Tuesday, which most of the city's live rooms do not.

Where to sit, on the second visit as on the first: the tables along the right-hand edge of the stage, which belong to the last bar on the right, one row back if you want to talk, the counter if you want the whole room. When to come: by half past seven on a Friday or Saturday, by eight on the other band nights, and whenever you like on a Monday. What to expect: a band from nine, a cold that reaches the pavement, ten bars that will each be somebody's favourite, and a walk of four minutes from the gate to the stage that on a Saturday is the busiest ninety metres in Central Pattaya.
