The street

A working street with a drink problem, in the best way.

Motorbikes two deep, a 7-Eleven every two hundred metres, English breakfasts at four in the afternoon, and between all of it, bars. Not a show, like Walking Street. A street. The sound is traffic until eight and then a dozen competing playlists. The smell is street food, exhaust and, somewhere, jasmine.

What the street does better than anywhere in the city is the early evening. Six to nine, before the night decides what it is, on a stool with a cold bottle and a television that nobody is really watching. The regulars are in. The staff talk to you or they do not. Nobody moves you along. If you want a night that starts gently, this is where it starts.

What the street does worse is the heat. Nearly all of it is open-fronted, and a fan on a pole moves hot air around without cooling it. By ten on a night in April you will want a room with a door. Our page on the hall with a band in it is the answer to that, and it is three minutes away. We say that as the people who run the bar beside the stage, so weigh it accordingly.

When the street has done its job

Three minutes to the band, through the lane.

From anywhere on the street, find the LK Metro arch, walk the lane end to end in a minute, come out on Soi Diana and follow the noise to the big sign on the right. Through the gate, straight up the middle to the stage. Look right. The cold hits you at the door, the band is in its second set by ten, and the tables beside the stage are ours.

The street, hour by hour

Soi Buakhao is a working street by day, with the motorbike repair shops and the laundries and the pharmacies open and the bars shuttered or half open with a regular reading a paper. From about four the shutters go up along the whole length and the stools come out, and from five to eight the street is at its most pleasant: a stool a metre from the pavement, the bars open-fronted, the crowd the people who live here, and the traffic a river of motorbikes going somewhere else. Tree Town is eating. The rock rooms are dark.

From nine the street is what people mean by Soi Buakhao: every stool taken, the music from a hundred speakers, the rock rooms open and loud, the pool tables all in play, and a crowd walking it end to end because there is always a bar you have not tried. It runs until about two, when the law closes most of it and the ones in the late list on this site keep going. The walk from the middle of the street to the band, through LK Metro, is three minutes, and the hall closes at three.

Mostly not; the street is open-fronted and fans. Beer Hubb's Soi Buakhao branch and the back room at Matador are named by reviewers for their air-conditioning. The whole of Las Vegas Beer Garden on Soi Diana is one cold hall.
What time do Soi Buakhao bars close?
Most beer bars run to 2 AM, the live music rooms to 3 or 4. Rock Factory lists 3 AM, both Trench Towns 4 AM. KQ Bar's counter is open until 3 AM every night.

    The big Las Vegas Beer Garden sign, two minutes from LK Metro. Free entry, no ticket, no dress code.

  2. Walk straight up the middle

    Past Pocket Kings, Palace, the V Bar, Full House, Viva, Aces High, MGN and Black Jack. The music gets louder with every step.

  3. At the stage, look right

    A black disc ringed with bulbs, a gold crown over the K. That's the door. The toilets are just past it, which is why everyone walks by at least once.
